Its aqueous solution is often referred to as lime water (when in large quantities, it forms a mixture of saturated calcium hydroxide solution and solid calcium hydroxide, which can be called lime milk or lime paste), and it is strongly alkaline. It deteriorates in the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and water, which is usually referred to as hygroscopic. It is generally used in construction or for the improvement of acidic soils.
